October News Letter

Reading
I’m very impressed that everyone is doing so well on their letter homework. I hope that you are finding it a way to interact with your student at home. The books may seem a little challenging for some and easy for others. I have done assessments on their reading and they will start traveling a new path in reading at their own level.
Please continue to read aloud to your students and encourage them to read to you even if it may only be a few words.

Multiple Reading Programs
Read a Million Minutes:
Corning Elementary Goal is to read 1,000,000, minutes. This means your reading to them as a parents or them reading aloud too. We will count in the minutes that are read in class.
Please turn in each set of minutes on Friday to Ms. Gray! http://www.corningramm.blogspot.com/
Book It!:
There is no longer a Pizza Hut in Corning, but we are going to continue on with the Book It since many of you travel to Red Oak or Creston. Your student has to hear or read 4 stories each month and draw a picture. They can earn one free pizza. KB made magnets to keep the paper safe of the refrigerator.
Olympics:
Our Olympic kick off will be at the end of the month. Our class decided to be the Orange Cheetahs. Please help your student practice their letters, sounds, and sight words. The popcorn rings have the Olympic words on them.
Popcorn Ring (it is ok if they don’t know them all)
When they get 10 tallies on a word they get a sticker, when they fill up their popcorn chart they get to take home the popcorn bag!
If a student doesn’t know a word, please don’t have them guess say the word a loud and then ask them to take a picture of the word. The student needs to hear and say the word several times to put it in memory.

Writing
Please help your student with their writing. Encourage as much writing on their own as possible. I encourage them to make the sounds they hear. I don’t need them to spell words correctly at their age as long as the sounds are where they need to be. They come in every morning and write in their journal. There has been a large amount of change in their writing in just one month.
Please help remind your child to write their name with a Capital letter at the beginning of their name and the rest in lower case.

Thank You
Thank you to Mrs. Gray for being our Mystery Reader and telling us about the post office.

Thank you to Mrs. Hontz for taking time away from her class to read us a story about bear being sick and all the friends that came to help out.

We thank Miss Iowa for making the trip here to talk about Character Counts! Also to Mr.Gray (Ms. Gray’s dad) for the character books that were handed out to KB students.

We also thank the Corning Varsity Cheerleaders and football players for cheering with the elementary pep squad at our homecoming pep rally!

Parent Teacher Conferences
A conference note will be sent with an assigned time. Please return the note in the FROG binder. If that time doesn’t work for you please let me know as soon as possible.
This is your student’s first parent teacher’s conference, and I’m looking forward to talking with you. Please think of some questions you might have, time will be limited and I want to make sure that you have all the answers you need.

KB’s Behavior Jar!
We have filled the jar more than once. The first time we had a pajama party. The second time we got to watch a movie and now we are working on Ice-cream Sundaes! They are working hard and on making good choices.
